Say Yes!

"The staff of the S.A.Y. Yes! program are a beacon of light to the families on Skid Row who may not have food to eat or clothes to wear. The kids are always having fun and can do positive things during the holidays and summer. The program helps the kids with their self-esteem." ~ Elizabeth Lottie Brown, mother of two

Smiling ChildBy offering individualized after-school care and attention to elementary school children living in the Skid Row area, the S.A.Y. Yes! Center seeks to transform the lives of those we serve. We offer one-to-one homework and academic support designed to improve school attendance, academic performance, study habits and computer competency.

Our volunteers from local colleges provide personalized tutoring, particularly in phonics, math and computer literacy. This special attention meets a critical need in the lives of our children, who now more than ever require care, continuity and support. In return for hard work and responsible behavior, they also earn "dollars" to spend in our S.A.Y. Yes! store. These dollars are a key incentive for kids in our program. They can save up to purchase toys and school supplies, or gifts for their friends and families, learning the value of saving and giving at the same time. Learn how you can help us stock the S.A.Y. Yes! Store.

While providing hot meals, we help children understand the value of healthy lifestyle practices, and improve their eating and personal hygiene habits. Our kids also participate in activities specifically designed to help nurture and meet more of their emotional and social needs. This curriculum includes an art liaison program with Inner-City Arts, pet therapy, character development, drama, creative expression, recreational games and crafts. Field trips to Dodger games, museums, events at local colleges, Disneyland, the beach and other locales are organized throughout the year.
